Veena is the instrument of Goddess Saraswathi,said to be the Goddess of "Vidya", which means knowledge. Veena is also one of the oldest instruments of India consisting of seven strings. Several veena artists of highest reputation rose to the top and impressed the audience all over world. Gayathri is one such artist with a fine mix of Melody, Divinity, Knowledge and Perfection.

Gayathri was born on 9th November, 1959 to Mrs. Kamala Aswathama, a veena artist of A.I.R (All India Radio) Madras and late Mr. G.Aswathama, a popular film music director. She blossomed into a Veena Player even at the age of 6. She used to spend hours in the "Pooja" room playing veena and never liked being disturbed in her practice and would break into tears if anybody did so. Knowing her interest in veena, her father then put her to regular practice and at the age of nine she got a break when Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, Triplicane invited her to take part in their Thyagaraja festivals and by members request, again in June 1970 she gave a full concert. From that time onwards, she never looked back. Today she has admirers of her music in different parts of India and abroad. She has 1500 concerts to her credit.

In 1988 she came under the expert guidance of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri. T.M Thiagarajan.
