Veena Venkataramana Das was one of the prominent Veena players of first half of 20th century.
Venkataramana Das was born in Vizianagaram into a musical family. His father Veena Chinna Gururayacharulu was a great veena player. Naturally he was trained by his father. He was also related to Veene Shshanna.
Venkataramana Das used to hold the Veena in the Urdhva (vertical) position to play as was usual in the Andhra Style. The Veena was made out of one block of wood and had a huge gourd resonator. The strings were thicker than usual and the Veena itself was much shorter than normal.
Veena Venkataramana Das was the Samsthana Vidhvan of Vizianagaram Estate. He was awarded the title Shatkala Chakravarthi by the Samsthana. Also a lion bracelet called Jagiru Veera Ghanthamani was presented by Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy. Apart from Veena, he was also an expert in the Sitar and the Rudra Veena.
