Profile

Baiju Bawra is the legendary singer, composer who served in the court of Mughal Emperor Akbar (ruled 1556–1605).

Historically not much is known about Baiju Bawra. One legend even places him as a contemporary of Amir Khusro and the creator of Dhrupad form of music. Another legend places him as a conteporary of Tansen with the original name as Baijnath Mishra. He was supposed to be the disciple of Swami Haridas, who was the guru of Tansen as well.

Legends talk about the royal court duals between Tansen and Baiju Bawra. The popular Hindi film, Baji Bawra (1953), is based on these legends.
