Majrooh Sultanpuri
(1919 - 2000)
Profile
Born as Asrar Hasan Khan in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Majrooh Sultanpuri is the most important link between
Urdu Poetry and Hindi Film industry. Along with
Sahir Ludhianvi
he raised the standard of Hindi film lyrics.
He was already a famous poet in Mushaira circles before he made his debut in Hindi
filmworld in 1945 writing for the film Shah Jehan which was sung by
K L Saigal for Naushad. In an
illustrious career spanning 54 years he had penned lyrics for about 2,225 songs
in more than 350 films.
His forte was his versatality and ability to pen lyrics to suit the situation
and many times even the tune, that had already been composed. One of my favourite
Talat song's was actually penned after
it had been composed.
Jalte hain jiske liye teri aankhon ke diye
Dhoo.nDh laaya hoon wohi geet main tere liye
