Roopkumar and Sonali Rathod are a popular ghazal singing couple. Roopkumar Rathod is also a popular playback singer.

Roopkumar was born into a musical family. Pandit Chaturbhuj Rathod was a classical singer of distinction and trained many well known artists. Apart from vocal music Roopkumar learnt to play chords and Tabla. Infact he started his ghazal career playing tabla for Pankaj Udhas and Anup Jalota.

Sonali was born into a business family, but her mother was a classical dancer. She learnt classical music from an early age from Purshottam Upadhyay and Hridaynath Mangeshkar and then from Ustad Niyaz Ahmed Khan.

Sonali made her debut with the album Aaghaaz in 1986. It was infact Sonali who encouraged Roopkumar to quit playing tabla and start singing. His first album was Parwaaz. Together they cut a successful album Ishara in 1996.

Roopkumar has also become a successful playback singer with the 1997 hit film Border, though he had sung a few songs before. It is to be seen whether he will remain in the highly paying film playback field or continue his ghazal career. Sonali though has not been interested in playback singing and continues her ghazal career.
