Profile
Kumar Bose is one of the most important tabla players of today and the standard torch bearer for the Benaras Tabla gharana having trained under the great Benaras Maestro, Pt Kishen Maharaj.
Kumar Bose was born into a distinguished musical family. His father Pt Biswanath Bose was a well known Benaras gharana tabla maestro. His mother Bharathi Bose was a student of Ustad Dabir Khan and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. Kumar Bose was initiated into tabla by his father. After his untimely death, Kumar trained under the great Benaras Maestro, Pt Kishen Maharaj, becoming his most famous disciple.
Kumar Bose became well known when in the 70s he started performing with Pt Ravi Shankar. Since then he has been a sought after accompanist of all the leading musicians of our time, both instrumentalists and vocalists. He also performs solo on the Tabla and has several solo tabla albums to his credit. Duets of tabla by Kumar Bose and his guru Pt Kishen Maharaj are also well received albums. Kumar Bose has been true to the tradition of Benaras gharana subtly balancing the warm tones of the bayan with the higher pitched crisp tones of the tabla.
Kumar Bose also collaborated in many experiments - with Zubin Mehta in his Philharmonic orchestra. He also performed in several symphony orchestras conducted by Pt. Ravi Shankar, Yehudi Menhuin, Arnovich. He has performed with many Jazz and rock ensembles too. He worked with Mrinal Sen for one of his films, Genesis, for which Pt Ravi Shankar scored music.
Two younger brothers of Kumar Bose are also into music. Jayanta Ghosh is a composer, Debojyoti Ghosh is a sarod player. Kumar Bose's wife Smt Kaberi Bose is a light classical vocalist.
