I say this because it combines three essential attributes of a great CD, viz. a) the fidelity of the recording, which is important for the correct reproduction of the original quality of the tone of the instrument, b) the quality of the content - Pt Dasgupta was at his very best in the very aspects in which he is universally acknowledged to be a master, viz. the treatment of the raga, originality of expression, and c) the choice of ragas, viz. you will not easily find a CD of this quality where you can hear three extremely rare ragas, that you can fall in love with the first time, and never tire of, no matter how many times you hear it.
The only negative thing I can say about it is that the Kukuv Bilawal piece was too short (the publisher's decision to drop the jhala portion, and the second madhyalaya gat), though the omission was more than compensated by the inclusion of the other two ragas.
If you don't have this CD you don't know what to compare other sarod CDs to! |
