Raag Savani - Deva Deva |
He sang his last concert before a large gathering of music lovers last May in Bombay. It seemed then that the fountain of his music would never cease to spout and play in its full abandon. The man is no more, but 'The legend lives on' through his voice preserved in discs and tapes as well as in the memory of the vast multitude of Rasikas who have enjoyed his music for over five decades. Pandit Mallikarjun started learning music In 1920 from Pandit Nilkanth Bua, the Gwallor Maestro under whose paternal care he lived for more than lO years, imbibing the gayaki and the vast repertoire of the Gwalior Gharana. Later, he learnt the Jaipur gayaki from Ustad Manji Khan and Ustad Bhurjl Khan, the illustrious sons of the celebrated Ustad Alladiya Khan of Jaipur.
His music was a beautiful amalgum of Gwalior and Jaipur gayakis. It had a vitality all its own. He sang with effortless ease with the pin-point swaras merging in the timbre of the Tanpura drone. In his deep involvement with the immaculate swara he was not oblivious to the pulsation of laya which lent a dynamic quality to his music. It was the totality and not the fragmentation that he presented all the time -swara, laya, Raga, Tala in one homogeneous fusion. This mode of presentation, to the exclusion of progressive badhat note by note, at times created a feeling of repetitiveness in the mind of the lay listener. Each phrase reflecting the image of the Raga became more and more complex passing through a continuous maze of rhythmic flux. Listening to Mansur was an intellectual treat transcending mere entertainment.
Mallikarjun Mansur received numerous awards, prominent being Kalidas Samman and Padma Vibhushan.
